A regular blogger, Joshua Dietz authored an article on motivation and how many struggle when it comes to finding the right lever to reach their goals.

Developing and maintaining motivation is difficult, in part because many people misunderstand how it functions. At the basic level, motivation operates as a psychological and biological mechanism that helps us attain what we want. It is can be as simple as tiredness causing one to want to rest, or hunger to get something to eat.

But more complex and long-term objectives arise, which require sustained effort. The issue might be one of losing weight, stopping smoking, or proactively working toward writing a book or starting a business. Unfortunately, too often such dreams fall by the wayside as challenges are encountered, the standard excuse being that one is not motivated enough.

What’s missing in this analysis is that motivation is not simply about having energy or desire to accomplish something, but also about directing one’s efforts with purpose and strategy. In many ways, motivation can best be thought of as a “seed,” with strategy and routine the means of taking that initial impulse and bringing it to fruition as a finished product. Viewed in this light, one focuses on the method of fostering results and achieving an objective step by step, rather than remaining always motivated.
