After graduating with a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Adelphi University, Joshua Dietz gained experience as a researcher with mental and behavioral health organizations. Joshua Dietz also lectured on psychology at the City University of New York (CUNY).

In February 2021, CUNY launched mental health services to help students cope with the impact of COVID-19. This service is provided at a time when 75 percent of Americans aged 18–24 reported experiencing mental health issues tied to the pandemic. This service is one of a number of initiatives the college plans to launch to help students transition out of the crisis.

Using the service, students can reach out to a counselor by texting CUNY using a special short code. Trained volunteers will assist students suffering from psychological or emotional issues and can help students remain calm during particularly difficult moments. If necessary, counselors will then make referrals to mental health professionals. The free and confidential service is being offered through Crisis Text Line, a company with a reputation for successfully helping people cope with mental health issues.
